How to explain yourself in an Interview

One of the most asked questions and toughest question people find to answer in an Interview is “Tell me about yourself??”

Now in this blog Execkart will explain about some of the ways you can answer the above question with ease and without any hesitation.

1. Find Out the Intent Behind “How Would You Describe Yourself?”

Many interviews are kicked off with the hiring manager asking you to describe yourself. At first glance, the question seems to be a friendly way for the interviewer to get to know you. In many ways—it is. It’s a light-hearted question that helps lighten the mood and warm things up before more difficult interview questions.

But—that doesn’t mean there’s no wrong way to answer it. In fact, there are many ways to screw your response up. To figure out what makes a good answer, it helps to know why interviewers so often ask some variation of “Tell me about yourself”.

The two main things the HR manager is looking for is:

  • To see your interpersonal skills in action.

  • To get acquainted with you on a professional level.

The best way to describe yourself will be fulfilling both of those requirements.

First things first, soft skills are important. Few positions don’t require any kind of communication skills, and many require exceptional ones.

The key to showing off your soft skills while answering this question, or any interview question, is to appear confident, remain calm, maintain eye contact,

listen carefully, and respond succinctly without rambling.

The second key to describing yourself is to make sure you’re answering the question in a professional way.

You may be a very funny person, but describing yourself as a class clown won’t help you land that software engineering job. Instead, use professional words to describe yourself and leave out any personal details.

2. I am passionate about my work.

Every employer seeks to hire people who enjoy their work, but the word “passion” evokes feelings of dedication and loyalty.

When someone is passionate about the work they are doing, they are naturally

committed to quality and positive outcomes.

3. Answer in pattern as below.

  • Present: Talk a little bit about what your current role is, the scope of it, and perhaps a big recent accomplishment.

  • Past: Tell the interviewer how you got there and/or mention previous experience that’s relevant to the job and company you’re applying for.

  • Future: Segue into what you’re looking to do next and why you’re interested in this gig (and a great fit for it, too).

This isn’t the only way to build your response, of course, and you can tweak it as you see fit. If there’s a particularly potent story about what brought you into this field, for example, you might decide to start with that “past” story and then get into what you’re doing in the present.

Whatever order you pick, make sure you ultimately tie it to the job and company. You want to be absolutely certain your interviewer is left with the impression that it “makes sense that [you’re] sitting here talking to me about this role.”

4. Be Succinct (and Definitely Don’t Recite Your Resume)

Whatever you do, don’t waste this time regurgitating every single detail of your career. Most people answer it like they’re giving a dissertation on their resume, but that’s only going to bore the interviewer to tears.

It’s not just about entertaining or engaging your interviewer. You’re also giving a hint as to how you’ll speak in meetings with co-workers, bosses, and clients. Are you going to ramble for 10 minutes every time someone asks you a somewhat open-ended question?

There’s no scientifically proven optimal length for answering this or any interview question. Some coaches and recruiters will tell you to keep it to 30 seconds or less, while others will say you should aim for a minute, or talk for no more than two minutes.

5. Come up with your own list of words to describe yourself

it's important to come up with your own responses, so that you truly represent yourself as an individual. Grab a pen and paper (or your laptop) and begin brainstorming about your top-notch worthiness by taking these steps:

1. Create a list of the competencies, skills, and qualities provided above.

2. Write down what you do to represent each quality.

3. Craft your sample responses accordingly.

4. Practice answering common interview questions that might prompt your responses.
